Types of Home Improvement

Home renovation is becoming a much bigger market in the United States and Canada lately, and in 2014, the number of people renovating their homes was at its highest level, and it’s looking increasingly likely that that number will increase for 2015. If you’re a roofing contractor or landscaper than you already know that this is great news for you and your business!

Home renovation has been in practice for entire millennia.  The earliest example of home renovation would have been in the B.C area in the Roman-era, where it was believed that home renovation was actually an official business.  Obviously, home renovation would have only been available to the wealthy and upper class back in those days, but you get the idea.   Today, home renovation has expanded to include the middle class in America as well.

However, terms such as home renovation or home improvement or home remodeling often get tossed around a lot very loosely.  Here, we’ll take a look at the different types of home improvement or home renovation there are and briefly explore each one:

Home Improvement for Comfort

Many people seek out home improvement for comfort purposes. Examples of this can include upgrading rooms with luxury additions such as a hot tub or a gourmet kitchen, or upgrading the ventilation and air condition systems, to adding new furniture and redecorating the home to match the new furniture.

Home Improvement for Repair

When a home is in need of being repaired, it’s not uncommon for people to go ahead and launch a home improvement project at the same time. Examples include replacing roofs, repainting rooms, or repairing the plumbing systems.  More common examples of home improvement for repair include replacing the windows or fixing the lighting, or making the thermal insulation more energy efficient.

Home Improvement for Adding More Space

People also go with home improvement to add on additional space into their homes, or switching up the existing space to make it more functional. Examples include turning attics into bedrooms, basements into office workspaces, or adding on an entirely new addition to the home.

Home Improvement for Safety

Finally, people may also improve their home for safety reasons. The Green Haircut provides many examples of this. Examples include installing a burglar system that can be activated or deactivated by the homeowner, a fire sprinkler system, security windows and doors, backup generators for power when the power goes out for extended periods of time, or bomb shelters or bunkers for protection from natural disaster.
